Urban Outfitters, and the center of that annoying girl's Facebook profile picture."
Only seven places on earth have been deemed world wonders - but if you're someone who lives for the story, you should add Prada Marfa as number eight. You've seen it in photographs, on tees from Urban Outfitters, and the center of that annoying girl's Facebook profile picture- it's also somewhere Beyonce has visited, if that means anything to you. We have wanted to come here for years, and finally after some half-hazard planning made it to the infamous store in the desert you actually can't shop at.
Let us tell you a secret though - Prada Marfa isn't actually in Marfa. It's 30 minutes out, through desert and dust on the side of a West Texas highway - if you're going 80 you might miss it.
Driving up was a surreal experience - all the grandeur and mystery was now real and tangible. It's just as wonderful, and even more charming in person. Prada Marfa was conceptualized by Ballroom Marfa as an art exhibit that displays a capsule collection from Prada's F/W 2005 line. The idea is after time it decays with the mountainside desert terrain it currently calls home.
While this has been a religious migration for style aficionados across the world, the biggest secret is the growing collection of love locks that adorn the iron gate behind the store front. Luckily I happened to have my gym lock in the back of my car, or else we wouldn't have been able to experience this permanent connection to Prada Marfa. Using a pink Loreal lip crayon (a life gives you lemons moment) we marked the lock with Mint Society's initials and left our stamp on this West Texas oasis.
We decided contrast in black and white against the natural terrain. Marfa is a little chilly in March, which is why we threw on light layers. While we don't actually represent Prada in our outfits, we do sport the usual culprits of J.Crew, Asos and Zara. We explored the dreamlike landscape around Marfa, and stumbled upon two horses who received the black and white memo as well. If the most popular Prada store in the world is on your bucket list, stop, plan a trip immediately (check out our Weekend Guide to Marfa for tips) and run here. The drive is long, but this is one check off your list you should complete.
